Meloni puts space strategy at PMO’s core

A decree places all critical-space resilience policies within the Prime Minister’s Office, creating a “single point of contact” to coordinate with Defence, Business ministries and industry, and entrusting the dossier to Meloni’s military advisor, Franco Federici

Central command for space. On 2 April, a seven-page, nine-article decree signed by Under-Secretary Alfredo Mantovano established a “single point of contact for the resilience of critical entities” under the Italian Prime Minister’s Office (Palazzo Chigi).

  • The move—spearheaded by Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni—aims to centralise Italy’s space policy management, notably streamlining talks over Elon Musk’s low-Earth orbit Starlink satellites.

Trusted hands at the helm. The decree assigns this new office directly to Meloni’s military advisor, General Franco Federici, who has already begun briefing key aerospace companies, as Il Fatto Quotidiano reported.

  • Federici’s mandate is to liaise with the ministries of Defence and Business, as well as leading private-sector players, ensuring unified decision-making and rapid response to potential space-related disruptions.
  • Meloni has reconsolidated authority, streamlining government and industry engagement under Federici’s oversight.
