Italian senator targeted by Russian hacker threats

Marco Dreosto, a member of Matteo Salvini’s Lega party, filed a complaint after threats from group NoName057(16) linked to a cyberattack on the Port of Trieste. Italy’s cybersecurity agency mitigated the damage as the parliamentarian urged stronger protection of national infrastructure

Complaint filed. Senator Marco Dreosto stated that he had filed a complaint with the Postal Police, responsible for tackling cybercrime, after receiving threatening messages targeting himself and Italian authorities from a Russian hacker known as NoName057(16).

  • The group carries out distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks on European financial institutions, government websites, and transportation services.
  • Earlier today, they sent a menacing message to Senator Dreosto, a member of Matteo Salvini’s Lega party, on X.
    • The post, written in Italian, read: “As long as Italian authorities, sold out to Ukrainian Nazis, continue to sponsor the terrorist Zelensky, no cybersecurity measures will protect your economy from the colossal costs and damage caused by our cyberattacks.”

Threats to authorities and analysts. The group, tied to attacks on Italy in mid-January, tagged multiple accounts in the post, including the Ministry of Defence, several politicians and analysts, and our sister website Formiche’s reporter Emanuele Rossi.

  • “These threats followed my recent Senate speech denouncing the cyberattack that targeted the Port of Trieste, a critical infrastructure for our country,” Dreosto explained.
  • The senator expressed confidence in the authorities investigating the case: “I fully trust the competent authorities, who are working to address this incident and ensure the digital security of our strategic infrastructure. It is crucial that we remain determined to safeguard our networks and national interests.”

A step back. The cyberattack Dreosto referred to struck the ports of Trieste and Monfalcone on 12 January, a Denial-of-Service (DoS) attack claimed by NoName057(16) on their Telegram channel.

  • The group also used Dreosto’s case to amplify propaganda, highlighting their potential threat to Italy’s digital security.
  • The attack temporarily disrupted online services at the Port of Trieste but caused no significant operational damage.
  • Italy’s National Cybersecurity Agency quickly intervened to mitigate the attack and support affected entities.
