Italy’s rising importance in the Gulf according to Bahrain

In an exclusive interview, Ambassador Alabsi praised Rome’s strategic engagement in the area and its commitment to security, economic cooperation, and development through initiatives like the Mattei Plan

Perspective from Manama. Italy is “gaining increased importance both in Europe and on the international stage, and its growing presence in the Middle East is a crucial step in strengthening its global role,” said Ausamah Alabsi, Ambassador of the Kingdom of Bahrain to the Italian Republic.

  • In an interview with our sister website Formiche, the diplomat argued that “though overdue, this engagement presents significant opportunities for Italy to contribute on political, security and economic levels.”
  • He added that the Italian government’s decision to deepen its regional involvement is “a testimony to its foresight and strategic vision.”
  • “Given that the stability of the Middle East directly impacts global stability, Italy’s proactive approach can play a vital role in fostering peace and development, benefiting both the region and the world,” he continued.
    • Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s recent visits to the UAE, Saudi Arabia, and Bahrain signal a renewed and strategic Italian engagement in the Gulf region.

A strong alignment. Ambassador Alabsi emphasised the “strong alignment of political views” between the Kingdom of Bahrain and the Italian Republic, noting that the bilateral relationship is built on robust security and economic cooperation. He stated:

  • “Key priorities include advancing transformative industries, enhancing technology and communications, and fostering joint ventures between both countries.”
  • These areas, he added, present significant opportunities for mutual growth and deeper collaboration.

Maritime security. Bahrain is already actively engaged in maritime security operations with Italy, mainly through its involvement in the Combined Maritime Forces headquartered in the Kingdom.

  • “There is valuable insight to be gained from the Gulf Cooperation Council’s experience in managing migration, which could contribute to more effective policies and solutions,” said Ambassador Alabsi.
  • Italy is further strengthening its strategic position within the Indo-Mediterranean region and the EU while increasing its focus on Africa through initiatives such as the Mattei Plan.
    • “The goal of a developed and prosperous Africa remains essential, and Bahrain admires and applauds the Mattei Plan for its commitment to fostering sustainable growth on the continent,” he concluded.
