Middle powers and the global order. The Canada factor for Europe and Italy

Formiche magazine’s latest issue, “The submerged order: The geopolitics of middle powers,” was presented in Rome. The discussion, moderated by Flavia Giacobbe, featured speakers including Canadian Ambassador Elissa Golberg, who emphasized the strategic value of stronger ties between Canada and the European Union

On October 14th, our sister magazine Formiche presented its latest issue, “The submerged order: The geopolitics of middle powers” at SIOI in Rome.

What’s happening: Following opening remarks by SIOI President Riccardo Sessa, speakers included Canadian Ambassador to Italy Elissa Golberg, Marco Ricceri, SIOI advisor and coordinator of Eurispes’ BRICS research lab, and Emanuele Rossi, senior analyst at Decode39; Raffaele Nocera of the University of Naples L’Orientale joined remotely. The discussion was moderated by Flavia Giacobbe, editor in chief of Formiche and Airpress.

The Canada factor: Golberg pointed to Canada’s role in the evolving landscape of middle powers and stressed the strategic value of stronger ties with the European Union.

  • She also highlighted the excellent state of bilateral relations with Italy and the significant potential for deeper cooperation.
  • A perspective that echoes Beniamino Irdi’s recent “On Board” column, which looks at the opportunities for Italy arising from Canada’s growing strategic diversification.

The big picture: Canada stands out for its pragmatic, action-oriented diplomacy.

  • Ottawa and Rome already found common ground on shared interests and strategic priorities at this summer’s G7 summit.
  • The discussion comes at a timely moment, as EU leaders meet in Brussels to reflect on Europe’s competitiveness, security, and capacity to act in a fragmented global order.
