Fincantieri eyes India to lead the future of global shipbuilding

In an interview with The Economic Times, Fincantieri CEO Pierroberto Folgiero emphasized India’s emergence as a global shipbuilding hub and outlined the company’s vision for long-term industrial partnerships in the Indo-Pacific

India is an industrial ally. Fincantieri sees India as a long-term partner—not just a market.

  • Existing collaborations with Cochin Shipyard and Mazagon Dock have laid the groundwork for joint development of next-generation vessels.
  • Co-development and technology transfer: Fincantieri offers cutting-edge capabilities in naval defence, propulsion systems, advanced materials, and offshore platforms.
  • “We view this as an invitation to share knowledge and build upon complementary strengths,” said Folgiero.
  • Fincantieri already works with Cochin Shipyard and Mazagon Dock, laying the foundation for the joint development of next-generation vessels

The Indo-Mediterranean synergy. As Italy and India expand cooperation, they share strategic interests across a region that bridges Europe, the Middle East, and the Indo-Pacific.

Support for “Atmanirbhar Bharat”. “Our leadership role in the EU defence industry positions us as a knowledge partner in India’s quest for self-reliance,” Folgiero noted while he was in India for Raisina Dialogue.

  • Through co-development and technology transfer, the company aims to strengthen India’s indigenous shipbuilding ecosystem.

Key technologies are on the table. Fincantieri is advancing stealthy, long-endurance submarines with air-independent propulsion and AI-enabled autonomy, redefining underwater warfare.

  • Smart, sustainable platforms: The company is also investing in predictive maintenance, fuel efficiency, and cybersecurity, crucial for projects like the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEEC).

The bigger picture. As the Indo-Pacific becomes the center of 21st-century maritime strategy, Fincantieri offers interoperable platforms designed for multinational naval operations — strengthening Italy’s value as a defense and innovation partner.

Fincantieri role. The company is a key driver of Italy’s global presence, from shipyards to shipping lanes.

  • Fincantieri’s global outreach — highlighted in Folgiero’s remarks — shows how industrial policy, defense innovation, and international strategy can move in sync.
