Italy continues push IMEC for development in the IndoMed

At a conference held today in the Chamber of Deputies, the League party examined the strategic value of the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC) for Italy’s broader Indo-Pacific projection.

Happened in Parliament. The League, a key governing coalition member, reaffirmed Italy’s commitment to the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor, viewing it as a strategic and multilateral route to connect India, the Gulf, and Europe through cooperation among like-minded countries.

Why it matters. IMEC is seen as a credible alternative to trade routes shaped by unilateral logics, such as China’s Belt and Road Initiative. It represents an opportunity for Italy to strengthen its national infrastructure system and position itself as the Mediterranean’s key logistics hub.

Who was there? The panel, hosted by the League’s Foreign Affairs Department at Montecitorio, featured Deputy Minister for Infrastructure Edoardo Rixi, League MP and Foreign Affairs chief Paolo Formentini, Senator Marco Dreosto, and Vas Shenoy, Italy Representative of the Indian Chamber of Commerce.

Key points. The speakers said that in an era of major geopolitical transitions testing the stability of global trade routes, Italy is ready to step up.

  • IMEC is expected to enhance connectivity between Europe, the Gulf, and India, offering a more collaborative model than other frameworks.
  • With its historic role in global trade, Trieste could once again serve as a commercial bridge between the Mediterranean and India.
  • Speakers also highlighted the need for a dedicated maritime route between Italy and India, built on trust and shared strategic interests that continue to strengthen bilateral ties.
