Fincantieri’s underwater strategy

The Italian shipbuilder is expanding its sights to the underwater domain, set to become ever more strategic for Italy’s geopolitical and defence prowess, technological edge, and its economy

The underwater. Fincantieri is turning its attention to the submarine sector, with the aim of consolidating its leadership in both the civil and military sectors. This strategic move positions the company to benefit from a burgeoning global submarine market, estimated to reach a staggering $400 billion by 2030.

  • One of the pillars of this strategy is the development of submarines for the Navy, which has just exercised the option to build the fourth U212Nfs (Near Future Submarine) submarine, worth 500 million euros.

  • These submarines, to be delivered in 2027, will meet the Navy’s need to increase its capacity to monitor and control underwater spaces in view of the renewal of the Italian submarine fleet.

The potential. Fincantieri’s proven track record in complex engineering and construction projects can be readily applied to the subsea sector, creating new revenue streams and furthering Italy’s economic diversification.

  • In addition, Fincantieri can play an important role as an aggregator of the Italian defence supply chain, as demonstrated by the agreement signed with Cami Cattaneo, an Italian company specialising in the design and development of specialised vessels for the Italian Navy.

  • Notably, in 2023, Fincantieri completed the major acquisition of Leonardo’s Underwater Armament System for €400 million, consolidating the company’s industrial capabilities in the design and construction of submarine defence systems, in particular torpedoes, underwater countermeasures and sonar.
