A crucial mediator. On Tuesday, Pakistan’s Ambassador to Italy, Ali Javed, praised Rome’s “important” mediation in securing the recent India–Pakistan ceasefire, specifically thanking Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani for his role.
- Speaking at the Pakistani embassy in Rome, Ambassador Javed also acknowledged the contributions of the United States, China, Turkey and Saudi Arabia.
- He called for a locally held referendum so that communities in the affected region could decide their own future and insisted that both sides must respect the result.
Tajani’s peace protagonism. On the same day, at a Europe-focused conference in Rome, Tajani affirmed the need for “courage to play a leading role for peace in Europe, Ukraine, the Middle East—and even between India and Pakistan”
- On Saturday, Tajani welcomed the ceasefire, urging it to become a “lasting accord.”
- He reiterated Italy’s stance “on the front lines against terrorism and any escalation, to foster peace and growth in Asia”.
- In the days leading up to the ceasefire, he held a series of calls with his Indian and Pakistani counterparts, underscoring Italy’s hands-on diplomacy.
Domestic praise. Deborah Bergamini, Deputy-Secretary of Antonio Tajani’s Forza Italia party, commended the government’s foreign policy: “Italy proves itself central and capable of influence.”
- “From the outset, we mobilised our utmost efforts to halt the escalation—and succeeded. Now our focus must be on preserving this fragile equilibrium,” she added.
