New Iranian Ambassador to Rome starts mission: Economic diplomacy amid high-stakes tensions

Iran’s new ambassador to Italy, Ali-Akbar Rezaei, has begun his mission in Rome, focusing on economic diplomacy and strengthening ties with Italy as a key European trade partner. This comes amid renewed geopolitical tensions, with the US administration divided on its approach to Iran

Iran’s newly appointed ambassador to Italy, Ali-Akbar Rezaei, has formally commenced his diplomatic mission in Rome by presenting his credentials and meeting with the Secretary General of the Foreign Ministry, Ambassador Riccardo Guariglia.

Reviving bilateral ties. The focus centers on economic diplomacy, industrial cooperation, and reviving Italy’s historical role as one of Tehran’s primary European trade partners.

The big picture: Economic diplomacy and institutional alignment. Before arriving in Rome, Ambassador Rezaei held strategic consultations with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian,Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, and leadership from the Iran Chamber of Commerce, Industries, Mines and Agriculture (ICCIMA).

  • In meetings with newly appointed Iranian ambassadors to Greece, Italy, the United Arab Emirates, Uganda, and Senegal,President Pezeshkian underscored the importance of strengthening relations with accreditation countries by promoting economic diplomacy that also encompasses culture, sports, and scientific research.
  • Line reconfirmed: This exact strategic line was subsequently reconfirmed during Ambassador Rezaei’s follow-up meeting with Iranian Foreign Minister Araghchi.

Between the lines: Washington’s political turbulence and the internal US debate. The ambassador’s arrival unfolds against a backdrop of severe geopolitical strain. Donald Trump has publicly attributed part of the Republican midterm election setbacks to the fallout from the conflict with Iran.

  • Washington’s internal divide: Within the US administration, a complicated fracture persists between factions pushing for a robust return to negotiations and hardliners advocating for renewed military bombardments.
  • The cost of escalation: Tehran has repeatedly signaled that ongoing warmongering policies, energy shocks, and inflationary pressures are generating severe global blowback and widespread public discontent.

Why it matters: Amidst this tense diplomatic friction, Italy is positioned as a credible European interlocutor.

  • In a recent exclusive interview with Decode39, Iranian officials explicitly pointed to Rome as a potential diplomatic bridge.
  • In recent years, Italy has discreetly reaffirmed its position as a bridge for European engagement with Iran. This line of communication has been discussed, for example, during Secretary General Guariglia’s visit to Tehran in June 2025.
    • From a strategic perspective, while that period was already burdened by chronic and renewed regional frictions, the current operating environment is exponentially more volatile following the cascading escalations triggered by the United States’ Operation Epic Fury – and Iran reaction with regional reprisals.
