Italy to provide Samp-T battery in new military aid for Ukraine

Kyiv’s priority should be to protect its infrastructure and buildings with air defence systems, said Foreign Minister Tajani. In Berlin, he signed a memorandum of understanding to support the reconstruction of Odesa

Samp/T incoming. Today, Italian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Antonio Tajani confirmed the forthcoming Italian military package supporting Ukraine, including another Samp-T battery.

  • “I fully agree” with my Ukrainian counterpart, Dmytro Kuleba, that “Ukraine’s priority should be to protect its infrastructure and buildings with air defence systems. Italy is prepared to send a new military assistance package that includes a Samp-T battery,” stated the Foreign Minister during his speech at the Ukraine Reconstruction Conference in Berlin, Germany.
  • This announcement comes two days after the European elections, in which the party of Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni (Fratelli d’Italia), which is strongly pro-Ukraine, reaffirmed itself as the leading party in Italy and strengthened its position.
  • Italy is one of the countries involved in the new Ukraine Communications Group (UCG) based in Warsaw. It was launched yesterday by the joint efforts of the United States and Poland to support Ukraine in defending against Russia’s aggression in the information space.

The reconstruction of Ukraine. Foreign Minister Tajani announced Italy’s investment of 140 million euros to support Ukraine’s infrastructure, railways, agriculture, health, and demining.

  • Italy, taking a proactive stance, will strongly advocate for Ukraine and its reconstruction during the upcoming G7 summit, which it will host this week. The Foreign Minister emphasised that Italy’s companies are ready to invest in various areas, not just military aid, demonstrating our unwavering support for Ukraine.
  • Specifically, Italy will also be hosting the 2025 Conference on the Reconstruction of Ukraine.

Odesa rebirth. Minister Tajani signed a memorandum of understanding on patronage for Odesa with the Ukrainian Acting Minister for Communities, Territories, and Infrastructure Development, Vasyl Shkurakov.

  • This agreement aims to establish a framework for cooperation and coordination with the Ukrainian authorities to mobilise efforts and resources for the post-conflict reconstruction of Odesa and its region.
  • As we reported yesterday, Italy has also taken steps to promote the inclusion of Odesa’s historic centre on the Unesco World Heritage List and to provide financial support for preserving the landmark Cathedral of the Transfiguration.
