On Tuesday… the Strategic Committee of the Med-Or Foundation was inaugurated at Palazzo Chigi, the seat of the Prime Minister and Italy’s institutions, marking a crucial moment in the Foundation’s transformation into the Fondazione per l’Italia (Foundation for Italy).

  • The ambitious goal is to unite efforts in the interest of the nation, solidifying the Foundation’s role as a tool for studying, researching, and promoting Italian soft power on an international scale.
  • The meeting, chaired by Alfredo Mantovano, Undersecretary of the Prime Minister’s Office, was attended by leaders of key state-owned enterprises such as Cassa Depositi e Prestiti (CDP), Enel, Eni, Ferrovie dello Stato (FS), Fincantieri, Poste Italiane, Snam, Terna, and Leonardo, the founding and main partner of the project.
  • The gathering established the basis for an initiative that aims to merge industry, diplomacy, and academia.
  • “The Foundation aims to serve as a junction for uniting the skills and capabilities of industry with the academic world, creating public-private synergies,” stated the official communiqué from Palazzo Chigi.

A groundbreaking initiative. The establishment of the Strategic Committee represents a groundbreaking addition to the Italian institutional landscape.

  • It is described as a structured and secure space for the exchange of information, assessments, and experiences, with the goal of developing a shared strategic vision.
  • This is an essential element in bolstering Italy’s global influence.
  • Notably, the Med-Or Foundation is already an integral part of the Mattei Plan, contributing its analyses to Italy’s new approach towards Africa.

Focus on key sectors. The new direction of the Med-Or Foundation focuses on projects in the areas of energy, infrastructure, security, and higher education.

  • The Foundation will place particular emphasis on geo-economic and socio-cultural partnerships with countries in the expanded Mediterranean, Sub-Saharan Africa, the Middle East, South America, and the Far East.
  • “Promoting initiatives in sectors with high geographical and operational interconnectedness is crucial for allowing Italy to express the best of its expertise,” the communiqué reads.

Innovative governance model. In order to support the Foundation, major state-owned enterprises will play a pivotal role in an innovative governance model, aiming for effective and synergistic coordination.

  • In this context, the Strategic Committee will act as the “brain” guiding decisions and ensuring coherence in intervention policies.
  • This approach aims to create an operational and flexible tool that can adapt to global challenges and strengthen Italy’s role as a proactive player in international dynamics.

Strengthening global position. The transformation of the Med-Or Foundation into the Fondazione per l’Italia represents a significant step in establishing the country as a key player in major international developments.

  • The involvement of state-owned enterprises and support from the Ministries of the Interministerial Committee for the Security of the Republic (CISR) offer a unique platform to enhance Italian excellence and systematically address the challenges posed by an increasingly interconnected world.
  • According to Anna Maria Bernini, the Minister of University and Research, the launch of the Med-Or project as the Fondazione per l’Italia signifies a crucial advancement in bolstering Italy’s strategic role on the global stage.
    • This creates a virtuous network of collaboration that brings together major public companies and the academic world. Med-Or, a key partner in implementing the Mattei Plan, is reaffirming its role as a driving force for integration and international cooperation, further cementing Italy’s position as a global reference point and protagonist in the expanded Mediterranean.
