The visit is part of the “whole of government/whole of society” approach through which the Italian Ministry of Defence intends to address the humanitarian emergency and the future reconstruction of Gaza, while reinforcing a partner considered essential for Middle Eastern stability: Jordan.
The big picture: Rome is engaged in medical and logistical support to the population of Gaza, a top strategic priority for Jordan:
- “Role 2” hospital on board the ship Vulcano
- Air Force flights for medical evacuations and the delivery of aid
- Air-drops of essential goods
Italy is also contributing to the training of security forces within both bilateral and multilateral initiatives.
What happened in Amman:
- Meeting with King Abd Allāh II:
- The King expressed appreciation for Italy’s “sensitivity” regarding the Palestinian cause.
- The discussion focused on Gaza and the West Bank.
- Portolano reiterated Italy’s readiness to strengthen the training of future Palestinian security forces.
- Talks with Gen. Al Hnaity: Discussion on the regional implications of the Gaza crisis and the repercussions for Jordan’s internal stability. Main concerns:
- worsening situation in the West Bank,
- pressure from Syrian refugees and border permeability,
- exchange of assessments on Lebanon and on the role of the international community in supporting the Lebanese Armed Forces (LAF).
Defence and industry: what is moving. Italy confirmed its willingness to support the modernisation programmes of the Jordanian Armed Forces in key sectors:
- border surveillance and control
- air defence
- counter-UAS capabilities
- integrated Command and Control.
- Relations between the Special Forces of the two countries are also excellent, with cooperation described as “strengthened over time”.
The broader strategic picture. Jordan remains a pivotal actor in the Middle East:
- a promoter of dialogue and cooperation in multilateral settings;
- a reference point for mediation in regional conflicts;
- a central partner for countries like Italy that aim to combine stabilisation, security, and humanitarian assistance.
The bottom line: The visit to Jordan by Gen. Portolano also coincided with Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s trip to Bahrain, where she was the guest of honour at the GCC Summit on 2–3 December.
- Taken together, the two missions underscore Italy’s growing integration into the regional dynamics surrounding the Gulf.
