Italy joins AI Opportunity declaration at Pax Silica Summit

Why it matters: Italy has taken another step in its technology partnership with the United States, signing the Joint Statement on AI Opportunity at the Pax Silica Summit in Washington. The move reinforces bilateral cooperation on AI, trusted technologies and resilient supply chains as Washington builds a new network of like-minded partners.

What happened: Ambassador Francesco Varricchio, Special Envoy for Innovation and New Technologies to Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani, signed the declaration on Italy’s behalf during the summit convened by U.S. Under Secretary of State Jacob Helberg.

  • The joint statement commits participating partners to deepen cooperation on artificial intelligence, trusted technologies and strategic supply chains.

Why now: The signing comes as Helberg is promoting a broader shift in U.S. technology policy. In a recent essay, he argued against the U.N.’s model of “digital sovereignty,” calling instead for “innovation sovereignty” built on trusted international ecosystems rather than nationally replicated AI stacks.

  • Pax Silica is the diplomatic expression of that vision, bringing together partners across AI, semiconductors, critical minerals, energy and advanced manufacturing.

The bottom line: Italy’s signature does not simply add another name to a declaration. It places Rome inside an emerging U.S.-led conversation on how trusted partners will cooperate in shaping the next generation of AI and strategic technologies.
