The President of Argentina will be the keynote speaker at the Atreju gathering this weekend, marking a significant step in the strengthening relationship between Argentina and Italy. Meloni-Milei momentum. Javier Milei, the free-market president of Argentina, is set to arrive in Rome this Saturday as the star guest of Atreju, the annual gathering organised by Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s Fratelli d’Italia party.

  • Relations between Italy and Argentina are gaining significant momentum, fuelled by the close personal relationship between Meloni and Milei, alongside the economic diplomacy efforts of Enel, the Italian energy giant.
  • Enel, one of the world’s largest electricity providers, is a key player in fostering bilateral ties through investments and strategic partnerships in Argentina.

All roads lead to Rome. Atreju serves as both a celebration of conservative politics and a platform for discussing key international issues, featuring an impressive lineup of leaders from around the globe and within Italy.

  • The event was inaugurated on Sunday by Arianna Meloni, Giorgia Meloni’s sister and head of Fratelli d’Italia’spolitical secretariat.
  • One of Atreju’s most anticipated moments will be a speech by Lebanon’s Prime Minister Najib Mikati on Saturday, underscoring the Italian government’s strategic commitment to stability in the Mediterranean region.
  • Migration will be a central theme, with a high-level discussion involving the interior ministers of the United Kingdom, France, and Italy.
  • The future of U.S.-European relations will also take centre stage, with a Saturday panel exploring the implications of Donald Trump’s re-election as U.S. president.

Italian politics on display. Atreju extends beyond Fratelli d’Italia, serving as a focal point for Italy’s broader political scene.

  • Leaders from across the political spectrum will attend, including Deputy Prime Ministers Matteo Salvini of the League and Antonio Tajani of Forza Italia, as well as opposition figures such as Carlo Calenda of Azione and Giuseppe Conte of the Five Star Movement.
  • Once again, Elly Schlein, leader of the Democratic Party, Italy’s main opposition force, will not be attending.
    • Lorenzo Guerini, a senior Democratic Party figure and chair of the parliamentary intelligence oversight committee (Copasir), will participate in a Friday panel alongside Undersecretary Alfredo Mantovano titled “The Italian approach to security in Western democracies.”
