Italian leaders condemn Okhmatdyt attack, urge global response

PM Meloni and FM Tajani called for global condemnation and underlined Italy’s support for Ukraine at the NATO summit. Rome is to send a new military assistance package, including a Samp/T battery, to aid Ukraine

The brutal attack. Yesterday, Okhmatdyt Hospital in Kyiv, Ukraine’s largest children’s medical centre, was hit by Russian missiles, killing five children.

  • Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, while in Washington for the NATO summit, spoke to journalists about the devastation caused by the bombing of the hospital. She expressed horror at the pictures of children with cancer seen on the streets. She emphasised that this provides an accurate measure of the seriousness of the situation, in contrast to the peaceful intentions claimed by Russian propaganda.
  • Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani also spoke out against the attack, condemning it as a war crime and calling on the international community to join in condemnation of the incident.

At the centre during the NATO summit. “The summit,” said Minister Tajani, “will serve to renew the message of unity and cohesion of the Allies in support of Ukraine, an issue that has been placed at the heart of the Italian presidency of the G7’s agenda.”

  • He also stated, “It will be important to ensure that the commitment to gradually and sustainably increase defence spending is accompanied by proper consideration for Italy’s contribution in terms of personnel and resources to NATO missions.”
  • Additionally, the Minister noted the shocking images of the destroyed hospital, emphasising the need for anti-aircraft support to be provided to Ukraine. In this regard, Italy is prepared to send a new military assistance package, which includes a Samp/T battery.
