PM Meloni calls IMEC a “crucial initiative” for Italy’s strategic future

Speaking at Confindustria’s assembly, she emphasised Italy’s geographic advantage and business strength, noting the Mediterranean’s renewed importance and opportunities for the country in energy, infrastructure, and the economy

A “crucial initiative”. Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni described the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC) as a “crucial initiative” on Wednesday.

  • Speaking at the annual assembly of Confindustria, Italy’s leading association for manufacturing and service companies, she underlined Italy’s potential to play a decisive role in the project, launched a year ago, citing the strength and value of Italian businesses as key contributors.

Focus on the Med. During her address, Meloni reflected on her two years in office, noting that her administration has made the Mediterranean a central focus of its geopolitical vision.

  • She further remarked that this strategy has encouraged Europe to re-engage with its southern front.
  • Thanks to its geographic location, Italy serves as a natural bridge between northern and southern Europe, betweencontinental Europe and the Mediterranean, and between Europe as a whole and the broader Mediterranean region.
  • Meloni explained that this advantage positions Italy as a key player in global dynamics, both strategically and economically.

The “middle sea”. She also highlighted the resurgence of the Mediterranean’s importance as the “middle sea,” linking two of the world’s major maritime regions—the Atlantic and the Indo-Pacific—through the Persian Gulf and the Suez Canal.

  • The Prime Minister stressed that Italy is well-placed to seize opportunities in energy, infrastructure, and economic development in this evolving global context.
