Trenitalia and SkyTeam: simplified train-air reservations for arrivals in Italy

The Italian leading rail operator has partnered with a global airline alliance to provide customers with a streamlined travel experience. This collaboration allows for a unified reservation system that combines air and rail itineraries, making it easier for passengers arriving in the Belpaese

A strategic partnership. SkyTeam, the global airline alliance, and Trenitalia, Italy’s leading rail operator and a member of the FS Group, have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to expand travel options for customers throughout Italy.

  • The announcement was made at the World Aviation Festival in Amsterdam.
  • This collaboration will facilitate seamless intermodal travel by allowing customers to combine air and rail itineraries under a single reservation, using Trenitalia’s high-speed Frecciarossa train services. With Trenitalia integrated into SkyTeam’s global network, passengers can now book journeys that include both air and rail segments.
    • For instance, travellers can fly from New York-JFK to Rome Fiumicino, retrieve their luggage, and continue their journey on a Frecciarossa train.

Currently… 14 SkyTeam member airlines operate flights to Italy from various regions, including Europe, the Americas, the Middle East, Africa, Asia, and Greater China.

  • The partnership with Trenitalia underscores SkyTeam’s commitment to delivering a more integrated, seamless, and environmentally responsible customer experience through enhanced access to intermodal travel.
  • Trenitalia is focused on promoting intermodality and sustainability, offering direct connections to and from 23 Italian airports, including SkyTeam’s hub at Rome Fiumicino.
  • The Frecce network serves 150 destinations across Italy with more than 270 daily connections, and extends to Spain and France via Frecciarossa services.
    • Frecciarossa connections are available in major Italian cities served by SkyTeam member airlines, including Rome, Milan, Turin, Venice, Genoa, Bologna, Florence, Naples, Verona, and Bari.

Intermodal travels. SkyTeam CEO Patrick Roux expressed enthusiasm about the partnership, stating, “We are delighted to join forces with Trenitalia as our second non-airline partner, strengthening SkyTeam’s intermodal travel strategy by offering more high-quality, high-speed rail connections – supporting our mission to future-proof travel”.

  • “Italy is an important global market for business and leisure travelers and with Trenitalia customers will have more choice and flexibility to go where they want to, how they want to, while enjoying the many benefits for which SkyTeam is known,” he added.
  • Trenitalia’s Marketing Director and CEO of Italia Loyalty, Mario Alovisi, highlighted the significance of the partnership, stating, “Partnering with SkyTeam takes Trenitalia closer to our vision of being one of the leading players in the European rail transportation market, offering customers high-quality, reliable train travel that complements international flight schedules.
    • “We’re excited to be on a journey together with SkyTeam in a shared mission to make travel more responsible and look forward to welcoming SkyTeam customers to our extensive network across Italy,” he added.
