Italian, Kosovar defence ministers talk Western Balkan stability

Guido Crosetto met with Ejup Maqedonci and stressed Italy’s focus on the issue, embodied by its commitment and growing importance within the KFOR peacekeeping mission

Talking Balkans. On Thursday, Italian Defence Minister Guido Crosetto welcomed his Kosovar homologue, Ejup Maqedonci, in Rome. Stability in the Western Balkans was, of course, the centrepiece of their conversation, as the area has seen flare-ups in violence over the past months. “It is necessary to put in place every action of détente and reconciliation to lower tensions and promote processes for dialogue between the parties,” said the Italian minister according to an official note.

Italy’s enduring commitment. “The Western Balkans represent an area of fundamental importance for Italy. Over the past 20 years, the Italian approach of the contingents deployed in the KFOR mission has helped to build a strong bond with the Kosovar population and authorities,” continued the minister, who emphasised – as a confirmation of the special relationship between Rome and Pristina – that Italy is set to become Deputy Commander of the operation soon, and again take command of the mission in 2025.

  • Italy is also in charge of the European Union Rule of Law Mission in Kosovo, dubbed EULEX, tasked with managing the civilian effort to monitor the betterment of the country’s political institutions.
